Mr. Kaplan has been involved with feature film and television production and distribution, film financing, music and intellectual property matters, having represented major studios, talent agencies, production companies, producers, directors, writers and actors. Most recently he co-founded Rubicon Entertainment, a production/ development company and served as executive producer on WHEN I LIVE MY LIFE OVER AGAIN starring Christopher Walken, Amber Heard and Oliver Platt.
Kaplan started his career as an entertainment attorney, and he continues to practice today. He has practiced in this area for over 35 years, first with the preeminent firm of Kaplan, Livingston, Goodwin, Berkowitz & Selvin and with his own firm, Stein, Kahan & Kaplan.
He also served as a senior business affairs executive at Warner Bros. Pictures in London, handling all European motion picture business affairs for such films as A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (Stanley Kubrick), O LUCKY MAN! (Lindsay Anderson), and DAY FOR NIGHT (François Truffaut).
In recent years, Kaplan has specialized in the financing of independent feature films, having worked as production counsel on over 20 films. In addition, he has arranged financing in all forms and acted as producer or executive producer on a number of films including PAPILLON, starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, KRUSH GROOVE (Warner Bros.) starring Run-DMC and other rap artists, NIGHT OF THE COMET, I'LL SLEEP WHEN I'M DEAD (Paramount Classics) starring Clive Owen, the recently completed SITE 146 for Fox, and the recently completed NIGHT MOVES, directed by Kelly Reichardt and starring Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Saarsgard.
He currently maintains an active law practice, representing primarily financiers and producers of independent films, and, at the same time, he is actively producing a number of his own film projects, including FORTY LASHES LESS ONE based on the book and script by Elmore Leonard, and BRIDGE TO JABEZ based on the best-selling book by Bruce Wilkinson, both of which are being produced in partnership with Mike Medavoy and Phoenix Pictures.
Kaplan is a graduate of Dartmouth College (1963) and Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley (1966). He is admitted to the Bar of the State of California. He created and teaches (for over 34 years) the course on the business aspects of film production at the American Film Institute Conservatory. He is also on the Board of Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, a group of six charter schools located in central Los Angeles.
