"In affecting a transition from an iconic piece of Mid Century modern design into a new and individually conceived object of utility, Messana O’Rorke was inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s use of juxtaposed familiar objects and contemporary references of amalgamated found objects, such as the tortured toy’s in Toy Story. This allowed us to generate a unique perception of both Grete Jalk’s Chair and the all too familiar Radio Flyer Wagon. The marriage of these two iconic objects, generates a new perception of both. The chair is no longer a static sculptural form and the wagon advances its utilitarian possibility. Interestingly, the Radio Flyer was first manufactured in wood when it was launched in 1917, just five years after Duchamp turned the art world on its head by creating ‘Bicycle Wheel’. While Marcel Duchamp destroyed the function of both stool and wheel to create art, our intention was to enhance the function of the chair through this metamorphosis."
The chairs will be on view at SUITE New York during the month of October for interested bidders to view in person.
