Bid to win the chance to join rare book collector and curator, Sarah Funke Butler, for an insider's tour of the Grolier Club, the oldest and largest bibliophilic society in the United States! Following the tour, you will get to have a drink and chat with Sarah at a members-only event (chosen date permitting)!
Climb the stairs behind a wall of books to the library balcony; view the Phillipps Closet, recently described in the New York Times: "an unassuming closet on the fourth floor containing an alarming, nearly floor-to-ceiling jumble of crumpled papers practically exploding out of weathered wooden crates. It’s a remnant of the vast private library of the 19th-century British bibliomaniac Thomas Phillipps — and, for the unprepared, a startling reveal akin to the first sight of Norman Bates’s mother in 'Psycho.'
'This is what happens when you are a fanatical book collector,' Eric Holzenberg, the club’s director, said on a recent morning." Then join her for a drink in the member's bar to talk books or, if schedules align, be her guest at a members-only event related to one of the current exhibitions - on calligraphy, miniature books, Walt Whitman, and more. Founded in 1884, the Grolier Club is America’s oldest and largest society for bibliophiles and enthusiasts in the graphic arts.
Named for Jean Grolier (1489 or 90-1565), the Renaissance collector renowned for sharing his library with friends, the Club’s objective is to promote “the study, collecting, and appreciation of books and works on paper.” Through the concerted efforts of an international network of over eight hundred men and women—book and print collectors, antiquarian bookdealers, librarians, designers, fine printers, binders and other artisans--the Grolier Club pursues this mission through its library, its public exhibitions and lectures, and its long and distinguished series of publications.
