Get to know the culinary history of New Orleans by spending a day eating with one of the city's most fascinating and knowledgable locals.
Howard Conyers is a NASA rocket scientist who has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Duke. In his free time, he carries on his family's tradition of South Carolina Whole Hog BBQ through demonstrations, classes, lectures, and community fundraisers. Howard will take you on an underground food tour of New Orleans featuring hidden gem restaurants that you won't find on widely circulated 'best of' lists. He'll take you to two to three restaurants and share his insights on Southern cusine, specifically by comparing New Orleans food to another popular southern port city, Charleston. Because Howard is a South Carolina pitmaster (his hometown is Manning), conversations will also focus on the ways geography and cultures influence food, especially by examining enslaved Africans' and indigenous peoples' contributions to Southern cusine.
Your New Orleans experience will include a two-night stay at the Ace Hotel, which sits on the corner of Carondelet and Lafayette streets in the Warehouse District. You'll stay in one of the hotel's Medium Rooms, which features a king bed and evokes the ornate inheritance-rich decadence of the city. Amenities include a custom cotton matelasse quilt designed by Ace specially for NOLA, window seats for divining plans large and small, as well as Roman and Williams lighting and bespoke furnishings inspired by the French Deco building. All rooms come with a flat screen television, fully-stocked minibar and Smeg refrigerators, Tivoli Radio, free WiFi, Rudy's toiletries and Pearl+ soaps.
