Artist Statement:
My work explores the relationship between color and form. Rendered in acrylics, they are comprised of three canvases assembled and framed as one piece. I was drawn to the multi-canvas approach because the interplay between panels enables simple shapes to unite, resulting in non-representational compositions that are bold and visually compelling. I employ a hard-edge painting technique that produces sharp lines with abrupt transitions between color areas. My rectilinear compositions are inspired by lines and forms observed in daily life. I sketch in silence through a process that is both meditative and hypotonic. I work toward a composition that feels balanced and exudes a sense of spatial unity. My most recent works take on a more architectural feel as the lines shift from mostly angular to primarily horizontal and vertical. My colors are mostly custom and are chosen intuitively. I work on a flat surface, first executing the process of taping off the shapes then building up several layers of paint with a brush before applying the final layer with palette knives and other tools for ample texture. My work is intended to evoke an instinctual reaction that uplifts and inspires. Artist bio: Jason Trotter is an American artist known for his bold geometric abstracts rendered in acrylics.
