Description of piece:
Banksy's artwork "The Migrant Child," often referred to as "Migrant Child," was created in December 2019 in Venice, Italy. The mural depicts a young child wearing a life jacket and holding a neon pink flare, which emits a vibrant glow. The message behind "The Migrant Child" is a powerful commentary on the refugee crisis and the perilous journeys undertaken by migrants, particularly across the Mediterranean Sea. The image of the child in a life jacket symbolizes the vulnerability and desperation of refugees who risk their lives in search of safety and a better future. The pink flare, a distress signal, underscores the urgent need for attention and assistance. Banksy uses this artwork to draw attention to the human side of the refugee crisis, emphasizing the innocence and plight of children caught in these dangerous circumstances. The choice of Venice, a city known for its historic connection to the sea and maritime activities, further reinforces the theme of perilous sea journeys and the broader issue of migration. Through "The Migrant Child," Banksy calls for empathy, awareness, and action to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by migrants worldwide. Banksy’s Graffiti Art is the most extensive official photographic record of the original vandalism that’s defined the world-renowned artist’s career. Photographers from Banksy’s Graffiti’s Art were the first on the scene within hours of Banksy finishing his piece. Large format cameras were used to capture each Banksy work and express the full scope of Banksy’s art – the strategic location, the use of the wall he “writers” on to use his verbiage and the way he plays with physical elements to construct a public statement.
Artist bio:
Banksy is an anonymous graffiti artist who may have been born in Bristol, England. He came to notice as a freehand graffiti artist. Banksy displays his art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. He is known for his anti-authoritarian art, often done in public places. With wry, wit and stealth, Banksy merged graffiti art with installation and performance art. The “street” is where Banksy made the world take notice. Each work was done on the fly, creeping around in the dark, getting paint on his hands and mud on his denims, carefully avoiding the police and the public.
