Written and directed by Mel Brooks, and starring Zero Mostel, Gene Wilder, Dick Shawn & Kenneth Mars, The Producers is a brilliant 1967 satirical black comedy film. It was Mel Brooks’ directorial debut.
A theater producer and his accountant, as part of a scam, have to stage the worst stage musical they can create; they will oversell shares on a massive scale and produce a play that will close on opening night, thus avoiding payouts. After the play fails, they will flee to Rio de Janeiro with the profits.
The partners find the ideal play for their scheme. But the play is so terrible, so offensive and the actors so bad, that the audience perceives the play to be a satire. It is declared a smash hit. Their plan is foiled, springboarded by stellar virtuoso performances by The Producers’ cast. Because of the shocking theme of the play, The Producers was controversial at the start and initially received mixed reviews— before becoming a cult film, amid critical acclaim.
For the film, Mel Brooks won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In 1996, The Producers was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry and placed eleventh on the AFI's 100 Years...100 Laughs list. It was later adapted by Brooks and Thomas Meehan as a stage musical, which itself was adapted into a film.
Mel Brooks’ signature has been examined and authenticated by James Spence Authentication (JSA), and a unique alphanumeric authentication label has been affixed to the photograph, lower right. The piece is accompanied by a corresponding Certificate of Authenticity from JSA.
