Esther Dyson (@edyson on twitter) became one of the most influential people in tech not by paying much attention to "the women thing" nor by joining (or creating) a prestigious institution, though she is proud to be a woman and also proud to be the daughter of two scientists. She began her serious education shortly after finishing Harvard (economics), as a fact-checker for Forbes Magazine (back when they had fact-checkers).
Since then her studies have included: 5 years on Wall Street as a securities analyst, 25 years as owner/editor/conference host at EDventure Holdings (the newsletter Release 1.0 and the annul conference PC Forum), 26 overlapping years in the tech markets of Russia and Eastern Europe, 6 months training as a cosmonaut in Start CIty outside Moscow, 15 or so years as an angel investor focusing increasingly on health (not just "care") and most recently, 2 years (so far) as founder of HICCup and its flagship project the Way to Wellville (@WaytoWellville). Eventually, but not too soon, she hopes to retire on Mars, where the 1/3 Earth gravity should make the living easy. To last that long, she has been swimming for 50+ minutes every day since she was 18.
HICCup, a nonprofit, is the first enterprise Dyson actually founded (other than a carbon-copied family newspaper when she was 8). Its (and her) mission is to demonstrate what a normal, small community could look like if it followed the HICCup motto "Don't rent your health. Invest in it!" "Our goal is serious evidence," says Dyson, "but it's also to make the place healthy and livable enough that real estate agents can see the difference in how easy it is to sell houses." The five-year, five-community project is run by CEO Rick Brush; Dyson knows her own strengths and weaknesses.
