Gymnastics have always been one of the highlights of any Olympic games. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Mary Lou Retton won a gold medal in the individual all-around competition, as well as two silver medals and two bronze medals. Her performance made her one of the most popular athletes in the United States. Her gold medal win was historic as Retton was the first American woman to win the all-around gold medal in Olympic gymnastics.
Olga Korbut can widely be considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time. Nicknamed the "Sparrow from Minsk", she won four gold medals and two silver medals at the Summer Olympic Games, in which she competed in 1972 and 1976 for the Soviet team, and was the inaugural inductee to the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1988.
While each of the individual achievements by the two gymnasts above are impressive feats, so was the team effort by "The Magnificent Seven" at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. This is the first US Olympic women's gymnastics team to ever win a gold medal for the United States in the women's team competition. The seven members of the team were Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, Dominique Dawes, Kerri Strug, Amy Chow, Amanda Borden, and Jaycie Phelps. Miller, Dawes and Chow also won individual medals in Atlanta. The team is perhaps best known for Strug sticking the landing of a vault to clinch the gold medal while injured.
