(Thomas Jefferson’s edits to The Declaration of Independence) Night Sea

Artist: Maggie Michael
Year: 2012-2014

Maggie Michael is a contemporary artist whose abstract paintings offer color combinations that clash as well as complement in a variegated apocalypse. A young painter working in Washington, D.C., Michael put a new spin, splatter and drip on the abstract expressionism pioneers when she launched her first show in 2002 after she received her MFA from American University. Her show was met with rave reviews. She has had solo and group shows for over 13 years in the U.S. and throughout Europe at some of the most prestigious art fairs and galleries including the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

Proceeds from this piece will benefit Sitar Arts Center. Sitar Arts Center advances the critical life skills of underserved children and youth and prepares them for achievement in the 21st century through visual, performing, and digital arts education in a nurturing community.  Sitar Arts Center was founded by Rhonda Buckley and officially opened in 2000, providing programs to 50 children within the walls of a 2,600 square foot basement in a subsidized-housing apartment building in Adams Morgan.
