Arts Horizons (AH) is a 42 year old non-profit arts in education organization where professional
teaching artists bring visual arts, music, dance, theater and technology into schools, hospitals,
senior centers, and communities in NJ and NYC. Our mission is to enhance the lives of people
of all ages and abilities by creating equitable opportunities to engage in the arts. In response to
the COVID pandemic, AH found ways to enhance disrupted lives through a small camera with a
big vision and pivoted to virtual programming. Assemblies, art classes, and multi-week
residencies found new life and increased importance in the virtual universe. Youth who were
physically disconnected from their peers and teachers found new friends on a computer screen as
our talented Teaching Artists helped them create, imagine, move their bodies and share their
voices, even as they remained sequestered in their homes.
It is the arts, and our extraordinary teaching artists, that are a crucial lifeline for our students and
families during times like these. We are essential workers who unite families in a shared time for
healing and creative expression; we nurture our youth to be creative leaders for social change
and innovation. Our community of artists and educators is a leading voice for arts-in-education
in this global pandemic. The pandemic may have shifted us to a new normal, but arts education
is here to stay. Arts Horizons continues our essential work to educate, heal and unite our schools
and communities through the arts.
