Ronald Harper, born January 20, 1964, in Dayton, OH, was taught to play the game of basketball by his mother who raised him and his five siblings. He attended Kiser High School in his hometown. In college, he was a star guard at the University of Miami in Ohio. His senior season at Miami, he averaged 24.4 ppg, 11.7 rpg, 2.8 apg and earned All-American Honors.
In the 1986 NBA Draft he was selected eighth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Harper averaged 22.9 ppg in his rookie season, placing second in NBA Rookie of the Year balloting. That season, he was named to the 1987 NBA All-Rookie Team. On November 16, 1989, after three full seasons with the Cavs, he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. He played for the Clippers until he signed with the Chicago Bulls as an unrestricted free agent at the start of the 1994-95 season. He came to the Bulls at a time when the franchise was trying to rebuild its team after Michael Jordan’s first retirement. Under Coach Phil Jackson, Harper became a key component of the Bulls’ perimeter defense and also developed into a true fan favorite in the city. As a Bull, along with teammates Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan, Harper won three consecutive NBA Titles from 1996-98.
After a solid run with the Bulls, Harper signed with the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent on October 13, 1999. In LA, he rejoined Phil Jackson who had come out of retirement to coach the Lakers in the 1999-00 season. Harper earned yet another NBA Championship that season and started in all six games of the 2000 NBA Finals series. He was also with the Lakers when they went on to win the 2001 NBA Title the following season, bringing Harper’s total NBA Championship count to five. He is one of just four players in history to win multiple NBA Titles with two separate franchises.
On September 26, 2005 Harper was named assistant coach of the Detroit Pistons where he coached for two seasons.
