Sustainability Measures:
Sustainability is a key focus for Hilton and thus, Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi. Since the building phase, the property has made its surrounding environment a top priority. The precise location of the resort was determined under a strict Environmental Impact Assessment, minimizing the impact to the delicate ecosystem of coral reef below. When the property opened in July 2019, a goal to minimize and eventually eliminate single-use plastics was set in place. Guest touchpoints include wooden key cards and property-produced still and sparkling water. The water bottling plant, which turns sea water into drinking water through Reverse Osmosis, produces an average of 6,500 liters of water per week for guest villa consumption and dining venues and eliminates an average of 8,000 plastic bottles per week. The resort also generates hot water for guest villas via harnessing and recycling the excess heat produced from the main power generators, bypassing the need for an additional boiler. In line with water conservation, the property has a dedicated ocean + coral restoration program led by an onsite marine biologist. Guests are offered the chance to fund and adopt a coral frame during their stay, which rehabilitates broken coral fragments found on local reefs that have been damaged due to coral bleaching.
