Austin City Limits is the name of the television show produced by KLRU-TV that first aired in 1975 on PBS. Willie Nelson taped the pilot episode on October 17, 1974, and the show is currently in production of its 40th consecutive season. ACL gives viewers unparalleled access to featured artists in an intimate setting that provides a platform for artists to deliver inspired, memorable, full-length performances. The program is taped live before a concert audience from The Moody Theater in downtown Austin. In 2003 ACL was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the nation's highest honor for artistic excellence. In 2012, ACL received a rare institutional Peabody Award for excellence and outstanding achievement. The program and its home studio have also been declared a historic landmark by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In 2002, KLRU teamed up with C3 Presents and the Austin City Limits Music Festival was born. The fall festival is now exclusively produced and presented by C3 Presents and in 2013 expanded to two weekends of live music. In 2011, Austin City Limits left its original studio on the University of Texas campus for a new home in the heart of downtown Austin, The Moody Theater. While Austin City Limits still refers to the television program, ACL Live at The Moody Theater presents concerts year round when the studio is not being used for television tapings.
Since 1978, Terry Lickona has been the producer/executive producer of Austin City Limits, and also is the co-producer of the Grammy Awards Show on CBS-TV. Terry has produced over 1,000 programs for public television, cable, domestic and foreign syndication, home video, and DVD, with artists ranging from Ray Charles and Johnny Cash to Juanes, Coldplay and Neil Young to Willie Nelson, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Jack White and the Foo Fighters. October 2014 marked the 13th anniversary of the Austin City Limits Music Festival, one of the most successful music festivals in the country. In 2011 Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater opened its doors in downtown Austin as a world-class live performance venue combined with a state of the art studio soundstage.
