Bid to win the chance to meet Josh Giegel, Technologist, Entrepreneur, and Co-Founder of Virgin Hyperloop in LA!
Josh is Passionate about the power of engineering to create solutions that enable people to live their lives how they want – where they want – in a way that is sustainable. He specializes in founding teams, venture capital, and deep technology startups.
Hyperloop is a new solution that is direct, on-demand, autonomous, and connects all forms of transportation. Passengers' board or cargo is loaded onto the hyperloop vehicle and accelerates gradually via electric propulsion through a low-pressure tube. The vehicle floats above the track using magnetic levitation and glides at speeds of up to 700 mph for long distances due to ultra-low aerodynamic drag. Hyperloop systems can be built on columns or tunneled below ground to avoid dangerous grade crossings and wildlife. It’s fully autonomous and enclosed, eliminating pilot error and weather hazards. It’s safe and clean, with no direct carbon emissions. Speed is not the only way in which hyperloop is different. With hyperloop, there are no timetables. Several pods depart per minute, and the system does not require stops at every station. The company is designing the system to deliver airline speeds, with the same tolerable G forces as any rail system and the ease of riding a metro.
Previously, Josh led research activities at Echogen Power Systems, a startup in the waste heat-to-power energy sector. Josh was the sole inventor of four novel supercritical CO2 power cycles that significantly improved efficiency and lowered cost. He also developed custom multi-objective, nonlinear optimization software which provided solutions in real-time to drastically reduce engineering man-hours.
Prior to Echogen, Josh worked at SpaceX where he served as the lead analyst on six different successfully tested rocket engines including the Merlin 1D and Super Draco family of engines. Josh's analysis was also critical to the success of the Dragon spacecraft where microgravity propulsion systems are an integral piece in the docking and deorbiting from the International Space Station. He received an "Ass-Kicker" award for his work identifying and replicating the Falcon 9 first flight anomaly, and decisively protecting against future such events.
