Gigi Dement was born in Baguio City, Philippines, the daughter of a sailor in the American Navy and a Filipino actress. Growing up in Dubuque, Iowa, when as a very young girl, she witnessed a feature film starring Sylvester Stallone being shot on the streets of her new hometown. However, it was her experience watching the stunningly stark yet simple visual style of Albert Lamorisse’s THE RED BALLOON that led to her lifelong pursuit of making movies.
Since defecting from Iowa and moving to New York City, she has produced numerous award-winning films, including GOD OF LOVE, winner of the 2011 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short — making her the first Filipino in history to produce an Oscar-winning film. In the five years since, she produced the indie gem, BASTARDS OF YOUNG, and the critically acclaimed feature film BABYGIRL, an Irish-American co-production made in association with Escape Pictures, Samson Films LTD and the Irish Film Board.
In addition to having several feature film projects in development, Gigi has most recently been exploring the world of branded and digital content, producing for Conde Nast Entertainment and their associated brands, the likes of which include Vogue, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, W Magazine, Teen Vogue, GQ and Bon Appetit. She has produced commercial, branded and editorial content for Target x WhoWhatWear, Canon, Samsung, Verizon, Patron, William Grant & Sons, Lexus, Porsche, Sephora, Anna Sui, Ferragamo, Urban Decay and YouTube to name only a few. Gigi is a double alumna of New York University’s undergraduate and graduate film programs, where she holds a faculty position. Currently, Gigi is in production on the feature documentary LIGHTS, CAMERA, UGANDA in Wakaliga, Uganda.
