Basecamp Explorer Kenya is a Responsible organization, managing three safari accommodation camps in Masai Mara, providing guests with exclusive wildlife safari experiences in the most authentic and responsible way in partnership with the local Maasai community. The Maasai Mara is globally renowned for its glorious open plains and exceptional wildlife. It is home to the greatest gathering of larger mammals on the planet, including such fantastic species as lions, cheetahs, crocodiles, elephants, and many more.
Your Safari will include stays in the following three camps:
Basecamp Masai Mara, a Gold Eco Rated Tented Camp in Masai Mara Reserve - fittingly referred to as the ‘mother of all camps’ by our staff, is where our story started. Lovingly run by our Maasai staff – BCMM is as much a home as it is a tourism destination. Here guests become more than visitors - they become part of the Maasai community.
Eagle View, a Silver Eco Rated Camp in the heart of Mara Naboisho Wildlife Conservancy, located a top a natural hill top, with unprecedented panaromic views of Naboisho, and in 2013 made the National Geographic Travellers Magazine’s list of the twenty five top eco lodges in the world.
Wilderness Camp, which is an intimate Bush Camp, and a nostalgic tribute to the safari of the early explorers tucked away deep inside the incomparable saddle valley in Mara Naboisho, 20,000 Hectares of pristine wildlife area exclusive for game viewing.
Basecamp Explorer Kenya offers a full range of Safari Activities, all of which are carefully developed to create the ultimate safari experience for our guests. We have years of experience in creating unforgettable safari experiences for groups of all kinds and sizes. Our broad selection of Safari Activities has been carefully developed in close partnership with the local community.
As a small and personal company, our 5 nights Masai Mara Safari with Basecamp has been tailor made to suit every traveler’s preference, with a choice to experience the splendor of the Savannah by driving or by walking, during the day or after dark. In addition to our Safari Activities, Basecamp offers a selection of authentic cultural experiences, including visits to our capacity-building centre, community projects, and opportunities for interaction with the local community.
Basecamp Explorer’s support for the host community is one that ensures a positive development for the local Maasai community, for the guests and for the organization. As an organization, Basecamp is founded on a close partnership with the local Maasai community, which has enabled the establishment and support of community programs aimed at enhancing capacity, raising awareness, improving living conditions, and wildlife development.
Through its projects, Basecamp Explorer, aims to provide sustainable development through capacity building for the local community and provide training and education opportunities that result in economic and social benefits for the local Masai community. For instance, Basecamp Masai Brand is an economic empowerment community project benefitting over118 local Masai women who utilize their traditional handicraft skills and talent to make beaded items for sale. The women make beaded items with 75 percent of proceeds going to the creator of the item. These earnings are what the local Masai women use for food, clothing, health care and education for their children.
Basecamp Explorer Kenya supports a capacity building program through education sponsorship and scholarships at Koiyaki Guiding School, a training institution that was established to train young Maasai youth in Responsible Tourism and other nature based enterprise courses, thereby providing employment opportunities, promoting and encouraging long-term conservation of the Masai Mara ecosystem. Koiyaki Guiding School (KGS) takes a holistic approach to environmental conservation in the region through empowerment of the host communities to effectively manage peaceful co-existence with the wildlife and nature at large. Of the guides employed by Basecamp Kenya, 5 are from Koiyaki Guiding School.
In addition to the community projects above, Basecamp Explorer was instrumental in the formation of an innovative and effective community partnership with about 500 Maasai land owners. This partnership formulated Mara Naboisho Conservancy which serves as a source of livelihood for the local Maasai community through revenue generated as lease fees and ensures the sustainability of the Mara Serengeti ecosystem. Mara Naboisho has successfully integrated tourism with traditional Masai practices providing employment opportunities and a secure source of income for about 500 families with an estimated 300 new jobs and indirect financial benefits to about 10,000 local people.
