The Campfire Project was founded by actor Jessica Hecht to respond in some way to the global refugee crisis. This summer, The Campfire Project will bring a collective of theater artists together with mostly Syrian residents at a refugee camp outside of Athens, Greece. Using theater as a means of convening and healing, and in cooperation with the NGO I Am You, the artists will join the residents to create an Arabic-language version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest with music, dance and mask, as well as help provide much-needed services to residents. The goal is to create experiences and resources to relieve the sense of despair and monotony that is so pervasive in the camps.
