American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit (tax ID #93-1219374) founded in 1990 to provide for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle. Celebrating our 30th anniversary, we are proud to say that ATR has saved and rehomed more than 4,000 turtles and tortoises domestically and internationally. It’s important to note that we are an all-volunteer operation with all monies donated going directly to the animals food, housing, transport and medical care.
Our house and the turtle hospital burned down Friday, November 9, during California’s most devastating wildfire, the Woolsey Fire. Thankfully, more than 50 turtles from the hospital evacuated with us, and those in the sanctuary were saved by hibernation and fireproof turtle and tortoise houses.
This past year has been very rough with the rebuilding process very slow and permits moving at glacial speed. It took us more than a year to get a temporary power pole to heat the African tortoises. Replacing the turtle hospital and all of its contents is a major expense, as will the renovation and upgrade of the entire sanctuary that took such a beating when the fire storm went through. Thank you so much for being here for us by bidding on this auction. Please share widely with all your turtle loving friends. And follow us on Facebook at American Tortoise Rescue, as we will have frequent updates. Stay tuned and pray for us as we recover and rebuild #turtlestrong.
American Tortoise Rescue acts as a worldwide clearinghouse for information about the proper care, feeding and rehabilitation of endangered and captive bred tortoises. We work to abolish “live market” slaughter of turtles highlighted by the recent outbreak of coronavirus, the illegal sale of hatchlings and the cruel smuggling trade. We also work to stop the sale of illegal turtles at mercados, swap meets and county fairs, as well as asking for a stop to the breeding of sulcatas which are overwhelming all rescues.
Twenty years ago, American Tortoise Rescue launched World Turtle Day®, celebrated every year on May 23rd. Its purpose is to educate the world’s peoples about why saving turtles and tortoises from extinction is critical. This observance is now “shellebrated” in virtually every country on the globe. We have millions of Google results, trend #1 on twitter and Facebook with thousands of followers.
