Johan Wahlstrom spent nearly two decades as a touring keyboardist and singer, playing alongside Ian Hunter, Graham Parker and Mick Ronson, before leaving music behind to paint full time in rural France, where he studied under fellow Swedish artist Lennart Nystrom. His dark, narrative portraits and torsos draw on cryptic social critiques he collects on scraps of paper in his studio. Since 1998, his work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions across Europe and the United States alongside artists including Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Picasso and Salvador Dali. He now lives and works in Jersey City, New Jersey.
