Stacey Sher has produced more than two dozen major motion pictures amassing nearly $2.2 billion at the global box office. Her many critically acclaimed and commercially successful production credits include such notable titles as Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight; Steven Soderbergh’s Erin Brockovich, Out of Sight and Contagion; Garden State; Reality Bites; and Get Shorty.
Sher is a two-time Academy Award nominee, receiving nomination honors for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Kerry Washington, as well as Steven Soderbergh’s Erin Brockovich, with Julia Roberts and Albert Finney. Sher served as an executive producer on the Academy Award winning documentary short, Period, End of Sentence, which was co-produced by her daughter Maggie Brown. The documentary short focused on the women in a rural village near Delhi, India who led the fight against the cultural stigma of menstruation. This film led to the formation of the non-profit The Pad Project whose initiative is dedicated to menstrual equity around the globe. Sher currently sits on The Pad Project’s board of directors.
Most recently, Sher produced the critically acclaimed Aretha Franklin film, Respect, for MGM starring Jennifer Hudson. She also executive produced the 93rd Annual Academy Awards alongside Steven Soderbergh and Jesse Collins, for which they earned an Emmy Award nomination. Earlier this year, she sold Michelle Zauner’s bestselling memoir Crying in H Mart to Orion Pictures. Sher will produce the film alongside Jason Kim.
Sher currently has an overall deal at FX Productions. In 2020, Sher executive produced the FX limited television series, Mrs. America, which earned 10 Emmy Award nominations. Mrs. America stars Cate Blanchett, who is also an executive producer and tells the story of the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and the unexpected backlash led by a conservative woman named Phyllis Schlafly. Blanchett leads the incredible ensemble as Schlafly, with Rose Byrne, Uzo Aduba, Margo Martindale, Tracey Ullman, Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Paulson, Jeanne Tripplehorn and John Slattery. Currently, Sher is executive producing the television series The Devil in the White City with Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rick Yorn, Emma Koskoff, and Jennifer Davisson. The series is in development for Paramount Television and Hulu.
Sher has also produced nearly a dozen TV series and TV movies which, in addition to AMC’s hit series Into the Badlands, include the critically acclaimed TV series Sweet/Vicious and Reno 911, on which she served as an executive producer for all six seasons. Sher also served as a producer on all three seasons of the Emmy-Award nominated Netflix series, Skylanders Academy. Sher has been the recipient of many honors, including from the ACLU for her commitment to film and television projects that are empowering, inspirational, and thought-provoking, dealing with issues from public safety to education, social justice to censorship. In 2007, Freedom Writers, which was produced by Sher and written and directed by Richard LaGravenese, was chosen as the recipient of the Humanitas Prize. World Trade Center, directed by Oliver Stone and produced by Sher, was chosen for the 2006 Christopher Award, which is presented to those who create films that affirm the highest values of the human spirit. Sher was also the recipient of the 2002 Mary Pickford Award from the USC School of Cinematic Arts and the Women in Film Independent Vision Award in the year 2000. In 2013, Sher returned to her alma mater and delivered the commencement address at the USC School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) graduation ceremony. Sher was honored by Chrysalis in 2018 at their annual Butterfly Ball for her contributions to the Los Angeles community.
Sher is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, BAFTA, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Producers Guild of America.
