Description of piece:
Known as “Shop till You Drop”, or “Falling Shopper”, it is a mural painted in November 2011 in broad daylight, located in London’s Mayfair district to point out the dangers of consumerism. It is one of the best-preserved pieces in London, because it is so high off the ground. Scaffolding and tarpaulins were used to make sure nobody caught the artist red-handed. The message behind "Shop till You Drop" is a critique of consumerism and the obsession with material goods. The image of the woman falling with a shopping cart symbolizes the dangerous and self-destructive nature of relentless consumer culture. Banksy is highlighting the emptiness and potential peril of valuing material possessions over more meaningful aspects of life. By presenting this stark and dramatic scene, Banksy invites viewers to reflect on their own consumption habits and the societal pressures to constantly acquire and consume more. The artwork serves as a powerful reminder of the potential consequences of unchecked consumerism and the need to find balance and prioritize more sustainable and fulfilling ways of living. Banksy’s Graffiti Art is the most extensive official photographic record of the original vandalism that’s defined the world-renowned artist’s career. Photographers from Banksy’s Graffiti’s Art were the first on the scene within hours of Banksy finishing his piece. Large format cameras were used to capture each Banksy work and express the full scope of Banksy’s art – the strategic location, the use of the wall he “writers” on to use his verbiage and the way he plays with physical elements to construct a public statement.
Artist bio:
The Artist: Banksy is an anonymous graffiti artist who may have been born in Bristol, England. He came to notice as a freehand graffiti artist. Banksy displays his art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. He is known for his anti-authoritarian art, often done in public places. With wry, wit and stealth, Banksy merged graffiti art with installation and performance art. The “street” is where Banksy made the world take notice. Each work was done on the fly, creeping around in the dark, getting paint on his hands and mud on his denims, carefully avoiding the police and the public.
