About the Artists:
Born John Matos in 1961, CRASH was raised in the Bronx, New York. At the age of 13 he began following the older teens from his neighborhood to the train yards and, shortly thereafter, he began bombing. Matos took the name, “CRASH” after he accidentally crashed the computer in his school and it wasn’t long before that name began appearing on trains running throughout New York City. In 1989, CRASH began transitioning from train yards to galleries and, as a result, he curated the ground-breaking exhibition, “Graffiti Art Success for America” at Fashion MODA which launched the graffiti movement that has remained active through today. As CRASH’s career took off, he was immediately popular in the United States and in Europe. Asia was soon to follow. CRASH’s artwork has been exhibited and collected by numerous galleries and museums around the world. His iconic imagery has also inspired a number of corporate partnerships with companies including Absolut Vodka, Fender Guitars, SoBella Handbags, Levi’s, Tumi and Morphik. CRASH is the co- owner of WALLWORKS NEW YORK, a contemporary art gallery based in the Bronx and Wallworks TWO, a locally driven retail boutique.
Eric Orr is an artist and a designer based in New York City. In the late ‘70s, working alongside such talents as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, Orr pioneered the substitutive style of graffiti art that eschewed “writing” in favor of visual iconography. This led to his creation of the distinctive robot that would become his signature and his alter-ego. In 1986, Orr created and self-published four issues of Rappin’ Max Robot, the first Hip-Hop comic book. Eric Orr has designed and illustrated images, covers and logos for musical artists including Jazzy Jay, Busy B, Positive K, Jazzy Joyce, Masters of Ceremony, Ultimate Force, Lord Finesse, Diamond D, Afrika Bambaataa and Diggin’ In the Crates (D.I.T.C). He has worked with and exhibited alongside artists including Futura, Seen, Doze, Crash, Chali 2na, Janette Beckman, Cey Adams and Kaws. Orr’s work has been featured in publications including Juxtapoz, Mass Appeal, Sketchel, Complex and the International Graffiti Times. He has produced designs for clients including Serato, Rane and Pioneer and he frequently speaks at universities, arts festivals and conventions across the U.S. In 2014 Eric Orr’s personal archives were acquired by Cornell University for its Hip-Hop Collection Archive of Rare Books and Manuscripts and in 2015 Columbia University acquired multiple works for its permanent fine art collection. In 2016, Orr was the spotlight guest at the University of Oregon’s inaugural Hip-Hop & Comics Festival. In 2019, in addition to exhibiting at the Moniker International Art Fair and Pop International Gallery, Orr’s Max Robot tag was centrally featured within the Guggenheim exhibit entitled, “Basquiat’s, ‘Defacement,’ the Untold Story.”
