Artist Statement: "The title of the work, The paradigm of society is not the pyramid but the circle, is taken from a Gloria Steinem quote. I used the symbol of the upside down pyramid, which is typically used to represent the female, and coupled it with a video of the sun setting that has that very rare and special green flash at the end. Green flashes are optical phenomena that sometimes occur right after sunset and lasts for no more than a second or two. In my version, the green flash lingers on the horizon and occurs after each set. The green flash is the sun, a circle, the imminent, and all of us; unleashed. It is the potential for extraordinary light. This piece re-contextualizes symbols to make a statement about the future. The title comes from a Gloria Steinem quote. Just a little update that the piece is in production and will be ready in two weeks. I have made a sculpture out of aluminum in the shape of an upside down triangle- the symbol of the female- with a video of the green flash that happens after very special, rare sunsets in the center of the sculpture."
Artist bio: Antonia Wright explores the various politics and comic facets of contemporary life through a multidisciplinary practice that blurs the boundaries between live performance, video, photography, sculpture, poetry, and perception. With extreme attention to esthetic quality, her work brings everything to the body to create powerful visual metaphors that at times appear ambivalent but are never obscure. Wright acknowledges the layers of societal taboos and barriers between her artistic choices, and pointedly pushes them into the public realm for the viewer to examine and assimilate. Antonia Wright graduated from the New School University in New York City with an MFA in Poetry as well as at the International Center of Photography. She has exhibited in the U.S. and abroad and has been awarded artist’s residencies both nationally and internationally. Exhibitions include shows at Pioneer Works (New York), The Faena Arts Center (Buenos Aires, Argentina), The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, The Cisneros-Fontanals Foundation (CIFO), Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Spinello Projects (Miami, FL), Luis de Jesus Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), Aeroplastics (Brussels, Belgium), The National Gallery of Art (Nassau, Bahamas), and Ping Pong (Basel, Switzerland). In April 2012, she became the first artist-in-residence at the Lotus House Shelter for women and children in Overtown, Miami. Wright’s work has been presented in publications including The New York Times, Artforum’s Critics’ Picks, Art In America, New York Magazine, Daily News, Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, and The Art Newspaper.
