Description of piece:
Like the phoenix regenerating through fire, Louis Carreon describes his Ryzantine art as “a spiritual journey going towards authenticity where you take all the bad and burn that fire to propel yourself into a better and more authentic future; exploring the value of redemption is everything”. Carreon has travelled that road personally using the art of the street and his international symbols of travel to navigate his way from obscurity to infamy, from incarceration to liberation, and from addiction to creation. His latest series draws on shamanic ideas of birds as spirit messengers of the gods and spirit guides to the shaman. These native bird images use the electric colors of the jungle to draw the viewer into a frenzy of emotion that will ignite their spirit with movement and vibration. To Carreon that’s essentially what art is and does, as it takes both artist and viewer on a healing journey. The mystical night eagles at the heart of this series are a symbol of strength for body and soul in many cultures around the world, particularly those of Native Americans. Carreon has found that strength himself in making his journey to redemption. Mixing street art with sacred geometry has enabled him to find healing, strength and purpose. This series is an act of thanksgiving and a paying of homage to Mother Nature for all he has received. That includes the opportunity to have his work hang alongside some of the biggest names in art, including Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, each of whom tapped their own forms of spirituality for the sake of their art. Having been inspired by travelling with the band the Grateful Dead as a teenager and having entered hippie culture at a young age by reading Terence McKenna, and Timothy Leary, he now feels a sense of wonder and gratitude in this moment at having climbed out of a metaphorical grave to spiritually succeed by having his heart works hung alongside those art hereos.
