Cathleen Young came to HUMANITAS by way of her 20-year career as a Hollywood television writer. She has written 13 two-hour network movies for ABC, NBC, CBS and Lifetime. She was a staff writer on two network series, MacGyver and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Young also won the HUMANITAS Prize and a Christopher Award in 1995 for her ABC Hallmark Hall of Fame Presentation "A Place for Annie," which was nominated for an Emmy® as well as being named a finalist for the 1996 WGA Award. Young's other credits include CBS Movies of the Week, Everything to Gain, Her Own Rules and Lifetime's Navigating the Heart.
The daughter of two newspaper reporters, Cathleen has also written for Working Mother Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, and The Chicago Sun Times. St. Martin’s Press published Young's biography of Isabella Rossellini, Quiet Renegade. After graduating from the University of Georgia, Young served as guest editor for Mademoiselle Magazine and began her television career writing for CBS' The Young and The Restless, where Bill Bell was an early mentor. Her father, Don Young Jr., was an Emmy® Award winning news producer. Her mother, Lee Guthrie, is also an award-winning writer. Young has been a Trustee of HUMANITAS since 1996. The HUMANITAS Prize was created in 1974 to celebrate film and television which affirms human dignity, explores the meaning of life, enlightens the use of human freedom and reveals to each person our common humanity. For over four decades, HUMANITAS has empowered writers with financial support and recognition to tell stories which are both entertaining and uplifting. While HUMANITAS continues to honor the writers of today, under the leadership of President Ali LeRoi and Executive Director Cathleen Young, HUMANITAS also empowers writers to tell the stories of tomorrow with the creation of the New Voices program.
