Description of piece:
This early 1949 image of Marilyn Monroe on “Red Velvet” was purchased from Kelly by Hugh Hefner and graced the first issue of Playboy Magazine as the centerfold in December 1953. Monroe was never compensated by Playboy for the image. Strangely, Monroe and Hefner never met each other but are in fact buried next to each other in Los Angeles. The Playboy Legacy Collection features 48 museum quality images dating back to the inception of Playboy Magazine in December 1953, with the inaugural edition featuring Marilyn Monroe. Each of the 48 images was hand selected by Playboy Magazine founder Hugh Hefner and International Images CEO Norman Solomon for its iconic place in history and was created by International Images in 2007.
