DAVID ROBINSON is a former NBA basketball player, who played center for the San Antonio Spurs in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for his entire career. Based on his prior service as an officer in the United States Navy, Robinson earned the nickname "The Admiral". Robinson is a 10-time NBA All-Star, the 1995 NBA MVP, a two-time NBA Champion (1999 and 2003), a two-time Olympic Gold Medal winner (1992, 1996), a two-time Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee (2009 for his individual career, 2010 as a member of the 1992 United States men's Olympic basketball team), and a two-time U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame inductee (2008 individually, 2009 as a member of the 1992 Olympic team). Robinson is widely considered one of the greatest centers in both college basketball and NBA history.
David and his wife, Valerie, founded the Carver Academy in San Antonio, which opened its doors in September 2001.To date, the Robinsons have donated more than $11 million to the school--a non-profit private school named for George Washington Carver to provide more opportunities for inner-city children. In 2012, the school became a public charter school. Now IDEA Carver, David serves on the board of IDEA Public Schools and is President of the Friends of Carver Endowment (which awards scholarships to graduates from the school).
In 2008 Robinson partnered with Daniel Bassichis, formerly of Goldman Sachs, and a board member of The Carver Academy, to form Admiral Capital Group. Admiral Capital Group is a private equity firm whose mission is to invest in opportunities that can provide both financial and social returns. Robinson's primary motivation in starting Admiral Capital was to create a source of additional financial support for The Carver Academy. Its portfolio is worth more than $100 million and includes nine upscale hotels and office buildings across the U.S., as well as Centerplate, one of the largest hospitality companies in the world. Admiral Capital Group also partnered with Living Cities to form the Admiral Center, a non-profit created to support other athletes and entertainers with their philanthropic initiatives.
HARVEY NAJIM is the President of the Harvey E. Najim Charitable Foundation and the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Sirius Computer Solutions, Inc. Mr. Najim founded Sirius in 1980 under the name of Star Data Systems. In 1991, Mr. Najim renamed his company Sirius, after the brightest star in the universe. His innovative business vision led Sirius to become a nationally recognized technology provider with revenues of approximately $1.7 billion when Najim retired in 2015. Today, Sirius Computer Solutions continues to be ranked among the largest IT solution providers in North America and remains one of the fastest-growing organizations of its kind.
Mr. Najim was inducted into the San Antonio Business Hall of Fame in 2009 and was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame in November 2010. In 2014, Mr. Najim was also named a Legacy Leader by the San Antonio Business Journal. His extraordinary leadership traits have made him successful in the business world, technology industry, and the San Antonio community. In 2016, Najim received the Martin Luther King Distinguished Achievement Award along with the 2016 Salute Award from San Antonio Sports for his extraordinary support of their mission.
In December 2006, Mr. Najim established the Harvey E. Najim Family Foundation to help children’s charitable organizations in the greater San Antonio, Texas area. Mr. Najim has donated a total of $125 million to the Foundation since its inception and has supported a wide variety of public charities focused on children’s social, educational and medical issues in the San Antonio area. Mr. Najim and his Foundation have committed approximately $123 million to the San Antonio community and pledged an additional $250 million to be awarded upon his death.
