Description of piece: This rare lithograph, with an original engraving, Lily (+ Ants) Chapelle, by Salvador Dalí is hand-signed and inscribed EA ("Epreuve d'artiste" - Artist's Proof), from the limited edition of only 350 numbered prints, with an additional 25 EA impressions, for a total tirage of 375. A vibrant and highly detailed Dalí colored lithograph forms the top portion of the image area, complimented by an original delicate engraving below. The designation "EA" is written in pencil in the lower left margin, and the artwork bears Dalí's distinctive signature, prominently, hand-signed in pencil in the lower right margin of the work.
Lily (+ Ants) Chapelle, from Dalí's Florals Suite, is at once delicate and bold, an iconic Dalí surrealist interpretation of a classic 19th century botanical print, with beautiful coloration and unexpected detail. Colorful lily blooms and green foliage are interspersed with stylized ant figures which form the flowers' pistils and echo the edges of the lily flowers. Below the lily is an original engraving of the castle Dalí built for his wife Gala.
The work comes custom framed and ready for display in a vintage frame of golden wood with a matching golden wood fillet, elegant archival double mat in black for the wider outer mat, and a perfectly chosen blue inner mat which highlights the artwork's coloration. The framed size is 38" in height x 31" width.
Created on Heavy Arches watermarked paper, the paper size measures 27.75" in height x 21.875" width, with an image size measuring 23.5" height x 15" width.
Lily (+ Ants) Chapelle was published by Editions Graphiques Internationales, Paris; the lithograph printed by Draeger and the engraving applied by Rigal. The reverse of the artwork bears the publisher's authenticating stamp.
Referenced in Dalí expert Albert Field's authoritative Official Catalog of The Graphic Works of Salvador Dalí, Reference: 72-7 K, pages 74-75, and valued at $15,000 in the 2015 edition of The Print Price Guide to the Graphic Works of Salvador Dalí, by Bruce Hochman OS, the work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Artist bio: Salvador Dalí, born Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, (1904-1989) was a prominent artist born in Figueres, Spain, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, sixteen miles from the French border, in Catalonia. Dalí's expansive artistic repertoire included film, sculpture, and photography, in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media, and he is best known for his surrealist work, including his most well-known painting, The Persistence of Memory. Highly imaginative, Dalí attributed his "love of everything that is gilded and excessive, my passion for luxury and my love of oriental clothes" to an ancestry of descent from the medieval Moors. His individualistic nature and resistance to conformity made waves, including among his colleagues. In 1934, when Dalí was subjected to a "trial", in which he was formally expelled from the Surrealist group, Dalí retorted, "le Surrealisme c'est moi": "I myself am surrealism".
