Description of piece:
Banksy's "Kissing Coppers" is a famous street art piece that was created in 2004. The artwork depicts two British police officers kissing, which serves as a powerful commentary on issues such as authority, homosexuality, and societal norms. The message behind "Kissing Coppers" is multifaceted. On one level, it challenges the stereotypical image of the police as an embodiment of conservative values and authority. By portraying two male officers in a romantic embrace, Banksy questions traditional notions of masculinity and authority. The piece also advocates for LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance, pushing against homophobia and promoting the idea that love transcends societal boundaries and roles. Overall, "Kissing Coppers" is a provocative and thought-provoking work that encourages viewers to reconsider their perceptions of authority, sexuality, and love. Banksy’s Graffiti Art is the most extensive official photographic record of the original vandalism that’s defined the world-renowned artist’s career. Photographers from Banksy’s Graffiti’s Art were the first on the scene within hours of Banksy finishing his piece. Large format cameras were used to capture each Banksy work and express the full scope of Banksy’s art – the strategic location, the use of the wall he “writers” on to use his verbiage and the way he plays with physical elements to construct a public statement.
Artist bio:
The Artist: Banksy is an anonymous graffiti artist who may have been born in Bristol, England. He came to notice as a freehand graffiti artist. Banksy displays his art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. He is known for his anti-authoritarian art, often done in public places. With wry, wit and stealth, Banksy merged graffiti art with installation and performance art. The “street” is where Banksy made the world take notice. Each work was done on the fly, creeping around in the dark, getting paint on his hands and mud on his denims, carefully avoiding the police and the public.
