Beatrix captures the energy and unique nature of her many subjects in her drawings and upon meeting the winner, will create an original one-of-a-kind portrait. Here is Beatrix's take on the art of the portrait:
“Since we stand at the threshold of a new and dubious era in replicant humanity, it seems an apt moment to grasp the last 15 minutes of intimacy.
What is intimacy, after all? Is it the sharing of the same thoughts and feelings? Is it being told an unmentionable secret? Is it the act of sex? No, it is stillness: silent, motionless meditation on the sitter's part, accompanied only by the singing of graphite on paper. A kind of Platonic camera, tracing the most essential outlines of a life.
One person said: it is not stolen time, it is time agreed upon. Taken deliberately out of the bustle of the ordinary. Entering a time capsule willingly, cutting everything off, just to be still. A luxury we hardly grant ourselves. In these fifteen minutes we simply are.
15 meditative minutes of intimate drawing can be seen as a correlative to Andy Warhol's loud and public 15 minutes of fame. They ebb and flow in inverse proportion.”
Beatrix Ost’s quiet sensibility has this somewhat mysterious, intriguing quality to it; but the minute she speaks, everyone around her goes silent and pays close attention. She’s eloquent, articulate, witty and wise and we couldn’t help but gather around her like it was some sort of kindergarten storybook time and listen to her endless tales. We’re talking about an effortlessly elegant woman who gracefully signs off all e-mails with, “In your body is a good place to be.”
Ost was born in Stuttgart in 1940. In her youth she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and with Expressionist artist Oskar Kokoschka in Stuttgart. An accomplished sculptor and painter for many years, her work has been exhibited in Virginia at Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News, and at various venues in New York and Germany. Ost is also a film producer, screenwriter and actress. A resident of the U.S. since 1975, she divides her time between Charlottesville and New York City. She has also modeled and acted (in movies and on stage), and is an expert skier and gourmet cook.
