We engaged the GJ chair design transformation in two ways simultaneously: one inspired by our desire to celebrate the women who were ‘firsts’ in the field of architecture; the other to highlight the aesthetic character of the chair itself. To achieve these goals, we hand-painted the names of 49 women who were architectural pioneers. The chair serves as both a backdrop, as if its wood grain were lined paper, and as an object to which the names need to conform, bending over the curves as necessary. As a way to further define the already prominent edge of the piece, we painted the underside of the seat and back with a transparent layer of BCRF’s signature pink, emphasizing the fluidity of the chair’s form and production method.
