En Poder, or In-Power, if you will, stands for the empowerment of the people of the city through my work, playing with the concept of electricity and illumination. Our motto is “Relighting the Neighborhood, and that is exactly what we intend to do. Much of Kadir López’s work is inspired by a meditation on time. By blurring the lines between the past, present, and future, he critiques the effects of progress, or lack thereof, and its spiritual, economic, and political consequences on society. In mining Cuba’s rich and complicated history as well as personal events, he creates a multilayered reality that combines space and time into a unified visual universe.
Artist bio:
KADIR LÓPEZ reached artistic maturity at a time when the image and the illusion of the Cuban Revolution had suffered a heavy blow. This is probably the reason why he sealed his destiny in tribute to the pictorial, on the one hand, and the urban on the other. Skilled in watercolour and acrylic, Kadir is also known for the creativity and originality of his installations, as well as for his use of non-traditional artistic media. Much of Kadir López's work is inspired by a meditation on time: blurring past, present and future, he critiques the effects of progress, or lack thereof, and its spiritual, economic and political effects on society. By undermining Cuba's rich and complicated history, as well as personal events, he creates a reality of multiple readings that integrates space and time into a unified visual universe. His exploration of the theme of continuity has led him to traverse the finite limitations of his own geographical environment and the pictorial plane. Kadir embraces the idea of a present in which different histories coexist and inspire each other. The fusion of ready-made materials and intervention allows him to be both observer and participant, author and audience. As a result, the world he creates is at once complex and beautiful, ambiguous and revealing, critical and promising. He has exhibited since 1990 in more than 90 solo and group exhibitions in North and South America, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. He has participated in a large number of international events such as the Havana Biennial, the Toronto International Art Fair (TIAF), ArtMadrid, Miami International Art Fair, Art Palm Beach, Pinta New York, Houston Fine Art Fair, and Hamptons Art Fair among others.
