"Originality, serendipity, humor and surprise infuse the art of Jerry Garcia. Although his visual inventions span a wide range of themes, they are basically depictions of fleeting thoughts and images arising from nowhere in particular. Jerry addressed subject matter as it arose in his mind or out of his pen, never planning or making corrections, but working automatically, for the pleasure of line and color and forms emerging in front of him at that moment."

Jerry Garcia, legendary musician, lead guitarist and vocalist for the Grateful Dead was an artist from childhood and painting in oils by the age of seventeen. As a teenager in 1957, he studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. Garcia, in his youth, thought of himself as “an artist who played music.” Jerry was very artistically prolific throughout his prodigious musical career and produced over two thousand original works. His fine art has toured in exhibitions since 1990. In 2014, the virtuoso’s art was exhibited at the Centre National d’art Contemporain Le Magasin, an art museum located in Grenoble, France. Several of the exhibition pieces were donated to the museum.
