The Coyotes' 2022-23 season was filled with individual milestones and team accomplishments, none larger than their 21-15-5 record at Mullett Arena, their temporary home. That mark was better than 13 other teams in the league, a seven-win improvement over the previous season, and the best home campaign Arizona has posted since going 22-15-4 in the 2015-16 season. Clayton Keller tied the team's all-time points record (86), which hadn't been done since Keith Tkachuk did it in 1996-97. Matias Maccelli led all NHL rookies in both assists (38) and points-per-game (.77). Both Keller (Bill Masterton Trophy) and Maccelli (Calder Memorial Trophy) could see some hardware in June. Nick Schmaltz reached the career-goal milestone of 100, and Keller, Lawson Crouse, Barrett Hayton, Juuso Valimaki, Liam O'Brien and J.J. Moser all posted career-high point totals.
Bouncing back from a devastating leg injury suffered in March 2022, Clayton Keller put together a season for the record books. The 24-year-old played in all 82 games in 2022-23, while establishing personal bests in goals (37) and assists (49), and his 86 points tied Arizona legend Keith Tkachuk's team mark that was set in the 1996-97 season. The 37 goals are the third-most in Coyotes history.
Schmaltz, selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round (No. 20) of the 2014 NHL Draft, was traded to the Arizona Coyotes in November 2018, and agreed to a seven-year contract with the Coyotes in March 2019. Schmaltz had a seven-point game (two goals, five assists) to set a Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets record for most in one game in an 8-5 win against the Ottawa Senators at Gila River Arena on March 5, 2022. He became the first player to score at least seven points in an NHL game since Sam Gagner scored eight for the Edmonton Oilers against the Chicago Blackhawks in February 2012. He also was the first player to score seven points without a hat trick since Eric Lindros for the Philadelphia Flyers in February 1997.
Both Schmaltz and Clayton Keller recorded their first-career hat tricks in front of their hometown fans. Keller, in fact, notched two hat tricks at Mullett Arena en route to his 86-point season, which tied a 26-year-old Coyotes record set by Keith Tkachuk in 1996-97. Keller and Schmaltz combined for 144 points this season, and 83 of those came at home.
