In early 2012 a mysterious band appeared online. The group, The Neighbourhood, revealed no biographical information, no photos and no backstory, offering only a moody track titled “Female Robbery.” Fans and the press were confounded, scouring the Internet for any information that might lead them to the identity of these musicians. Pieces of the puzzle, some reflecting reality and some not so much, began to emerge. The Neighbourhood were a quintet. They were from California despite the British spelling of their name. They had a second track, “Sweater Weather,” which had an accompanying— and equally dark— video.
Although The Neighbourhood’s identity remained hazy, it became clear that the music they were making felt transformative to critics and fans alike. The evocative combination of rock instruments with R&B and hip-hop aesthetics seemed, in many ways, revelatory, a reimagining of sounds that seemed to make people clamor for more information with even greater fervor. In April, BBC Radio One DJ Zane Lowe, an early champion of the group, let it slip that The Neighbourhood was the handiwork of musician Jesse Rutherford, a resident of Newbury Park, CA. By early May, as the band unveiled a free, self-released EP titled I’m Sorry, it became understood that the identity of this young band was, ultimately, secondary to the music itself.
The Neighbourhood has announced a slew of new North American headlining tour dates scheduled to begin this fall. Kicking off in New Mexico, the two-month trek includes shows in multiple major cities including Nashville, Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago and Los Angeles before winding down in Las Vegas. The tour will feature supporting acts The Bad Suns and Hunny.
Praised for their “moody, atmospheric rock tracks” by Rolling Stone, The Neighbourhood enjoyed multiple successful tours and major festival appearances in 2013/2014 in support of their breakout debut album I Love You. The 11-track debut spawned the band’s influential, double-platinum hit single “Sweater Weather,” which ruled radio and video platforms for months with one of the longest runs in 2013. Among other memorable songs on I Love You is follow-up single “Afraid,” commended by Billboard for its “edgy, subtle hooks,” which reached the top 5 at Alternative Radio. The album itself was widely acclaimed for its soaring textures and atmospheric themes, touted by Billboard as a “darkly moody album [that] aptly culls together indie rock and R&B.” In November 2014, the band also released a surprise rap-inspired mixtape, #000000 & #FFFFFF (the HTML color codes for black & white), which featured a host of notable guests including YG, French Montana, Raury and more.
The band is currently in the studio working on their sophomore album.
