Frogs are disappearing rapidly and face the most significant mass extinction since the dinosaurs - but we can prevent it. Amphibian Ark, a nonprofit organization created by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the World Conservation Union, coordinates the rescue of the most threatened amphibian species so that they can breed and one day be released back into the wild.

There are 500 species in imminent danger of extinction. Amphibian Ark's physical plan for saving them requires the construction and staffing of biosecure facilities, in addition to training and workshops for conservation organizations around the world that will implement the plan.

This will be the largest conservation effort ever, requiring $50-$60 million to complete. Conservation organizations worldwide have declared 2008 "the year of the frog" to draw attention to the crisis.

Why frogs matter:
  • Amphibians play an important role in nature as both predator and prey, sustaining the delicate balance of nature.
  • They eat pest insects, benefiting successful agriculture around the world and minimizing the spread of disease, including malaria.
  • The skin of amphibians has substances that protect them from some microbes and viruses, offering possible medical cures for a variety of human diseases, including AIDS.
  • Frogs have had a special place in various human cultures for centuries, cherished as agents of life and good luck.
5 for Frogs:

5 for Frogs is a five-month campaign by Amphibian Ark that began May 1. Concerned individuals are encouraged to tell at least 5 people about the amphibian crisis and commit to an activity that will raise money in any amount of "5". The time frame for raising funds should be 5 days, 5 weeks or 5 months, in order to help Amphibian Ark raise $500,000 to save 5 species of frogs. Fifty ideas for getting involved are listed on the Amphibian Ark Web site at www.amphibianark.org.
