The annual Sweethearts and Patriots gala is organized jointly by young members of the District of Columbia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and members of the District of Columbia Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The 2015 Sweethearts and Patriots Gala on February 7 will benefit Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). TAPS helps those who are grieving the loss of a loved one who served in the military. The organization started as a group of military families who tragically lost their loved ones in a military plane crash in 1992. The families connected with each other and through the process of rebuilding their lives found comfort in helping one another. Later, in 1994, Bonnie Carroll founded TAPS. After extensive study, she created the organization using best practices found in peer-based support programs.

Today, TAPS offers many resources to survivors, including counseling services and opportunities to connect with others. TAPS also holds a variety of events each year and programs designed to assist with the healing process after losing a loved one.
