The mission of Esperanza is to create a safe and productive response to the challenges and needs of court-involved youth.

Founded in 2002 as a project of the Vera Institute of Justice and incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) organization in 2006, Esperanza was established in response to the dismal outcomes of juvenile incarceration.

Esperanza began working with youth as part of the City’s efforts to reduce the number of young people placed outside of their homes on delinquency cases in Family Court. They have since expanded to serving young people who are prosecuted as adults in Supreme/Criminal Court.
