Charles Burwell’s portfolio evolves the linear, graphic sensibility present in the works of Cy Twombly, Mark Tobey, Agnes Martin and Jack Tworkov, his influences. Since the early 1990s, he has been creating paintings that involve a specific layering process, which rely on the interaction of the controlled dripped line, maze line linear forms, and organic and geometric forms with specific color structures. Now he is moving toward exploring more spatial complexity, with connections to biology, tech, and the complexity of the current info-laden culture (began working with the computer). He is represented largely at the Bridgette Mayer Gallery, and has been featured in various publications in Philadelphia, such as the Inquirer.
