Artist bio:
BUST: ROSE FALCON "Yes, this is a breast cast, but to me, it represents my story and hope for increased awareness. Breast cancer took my mother’s life at the age of 29; I was four years old. Now that I have a son, I miss her more than ever. I wish she was here to show me how to be a better mother, to love on this beautiful baby boy, to have held my hand when he was born and to give me guidance when I first held him and asked, through my tears of joy and fear, “what do I do, what do I do?” A few years ago, through genetic testing, I found out that I carry the breast cancer gene. Some people say they would rather not know, but I found the information empowering. I am now able to take extra care in making sure I check myself. Because I’m “high risk,” I have a mammogram or MRI scheduled every six months. I want to do everything I can to ensure I will be here for my son, Ryder. I don’t want him to miss me, like I miss my mom, at every milestone. I share this in hopes that someone who is avoiding a mammogram or self-check will suck it up and #feelyourboobies or let someone else! You are worth it. If you won’t do it for yourself, do it for someone who loves you."
ARTIST: BRIAN WOODEN "This piece is an illustrative representation of the search for one's heart. To see to the heart, we need to look through layers of bone structure and even through grass, leaves, and other elements of Mother Nature, who is also in hiding. She looks on with an open eye and invites you to come in, play, and explore the environment around her. I used this same mentality of spacial play to create the piece. I went in with no plan and added elements as I explored the canvas. Play is natural. Nature is healing."
