“Irresistable, stirring and vibrant. Urie and Ruehl are two ideally matched performers at the top!"
After a smash-hit run Off-Broadway, Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song heads to Broadway for a strictly limited engagement. This critically acclaimed production of the Tony Award®-winning comedy stars Drama Desk Award winner Michael Urie (Ugly Betty, Buyer & Cellar) and Academy Award® and Tony winner Mercedes Ruehl (The Fisher King, Lost in Yonkers) and is directed by Tony nominee Moises Kaufman (The Laramie Project, I Am My Own Wife).
Hilarious and heart wrenching, Torch Song follows Arnold Beckoff's odyssey to find happiness in New York. All he wants is a husband, a child and a pair of bunny slippers that fit, but a visit from his overbearing mother reminds him that he needs one thing more: respect. Join Arnold on this all too human journey about the families we're born into, the families we choose and the battles to bring them all home.
Michael Urie attended the Juilliard School in New York City and, in 2002, won the prestigious John Houseman Prize for Excellence in Classical Theatre. Urie's big break came in 2006, when he landed a role on the popular ABC show Ugly Betty. He played Marc St. James, Betty's flamboyantly gay and impeccably dressed nemesis and fellow staff member of Mode magazine. The series ran until 2010 and garnered wide acclaim, including Golden Globe and Emmy awards. Urie originated the role of Rudi Gernreich in the 2009 off-Broadway play The Temperamentals, about the foundation of the early LGBT rights organization the Mattachine Society. Urie received a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor. In January 2012, Urie made his Broadway debut, joining the cast of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying's second revival in the role of Bud Frump. His performance in his 2013's one-man show Buyer & Cellar won him a Clarence Derwent Award. Following a successful run last fall at Second Stage, Urie will be starring as Arnold Beckoff in Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song revival on Broadway this November.
