Description of piece:
This painting shows a Black woman in a central role of a narrative. With her body standing in a relaxed position usually held by men that also exudes power. The painting is a contrast to European paintings of Black women usually seen in the background. The landscape in the background of this painting is a portion of a painting by one of the first African American painters Robert S. Duncanson.
