Description of piece:
This painting shows a Black woman in a central role of a narrative. With her body standing in a relaxed position usually held by men that also exudes power. The painting is a contrast to European paintings of Black women usually seen in the background. The landscape in the background of this painting is a portion of a painting by one of the first African American painters Robert S. Duncanson.

Artist bio:
Mario Moore (b. 1987) is a Detroit native, currently residing in Brooklyn. Moore received a BFA in Illustration from the College for Creative Studies (2009) and an MFA in Painting from the Yale School of Art (2013). He has participated as an artist-in-residence at Knox College, the Fountainhead residency and The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. Moore’s work has afforded him many opportunities-- from multiple exhibitions and featured articles including the New York Times. Some of his solo show exhibits have been seen at Winston-Salem State University’s Diggs Gallery and The Urban Institute of Contemporary Art. Moore's work is included in private and public collections which include Knox College and The Detroit Institute of Arts. Recently Moore was awarded the 2018-2019 Princeton Hodder Fellowship.
