Bid to win an authentic 4-course Austrian dinner with wine pairing for 8 prepared & served in your Manhattan home by Austrian Food & Wine Pioneer Monika Caha.
Monika Caha was born and raised in Vienna, Austria and is known as a pioneer of Austrian food and wine in the US. Her passion for cooking was instilled in her from a young age by extraordinary cooks; her mother and grandmother. After years in the film business, Monika returned to her first love, and in the mid-90’s was owner and executive chef of Kaffeehaus, one of the first of the new wave of Austrian restaurants. Having always practiced nose to tail cooking, she built a huge following of foodies and downtown artists with her myriad authentic Austrian dishes elevated to a new level with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Her next success was Candy Bar & Grill, a high concept retro restaurant and lounge known for its award-winning cocktails and contemporary fusion cuisine, and one of Chelsea’s earliest hot spots. In 2003, Monika followed her passion for Austrian wine and founded Monika Caha Selections, a critically acclaimed portfolio comprised exclusively of boutique family estates whose winemakers are among the most celebrated of Austria. Monika meticulously selects every wine in the portfolio, wines that consistently demonstrate the balance and elegance to pair perfectly with food as well as the right degree of complexity, structure and finesse.
Austria has more organic farmland per capita than anywhere else in Europe, reflected by her winemakers who hand harvest and whose commitment to utilizing methods in harmony with nature range from sustainable to organic to bio-dynamic. While still not well known in the US, Austrian wine represents some of the world’s finest wines, as wine has been made in Austria for millennia. Austrian white wines are among the few white wines in the world with tremendous aging potential. Considering herself a “Heritage Cook”, Monika is currently working on a documentary about women’s cooking from the Stone Age to the 21st century.
