Scottish-born Holly Fulton is an emerging fashion designer whose work is flooding the pages of British style magazines and blogs. A graduate of London’s prestigious Royal College of Art, Fulton began her career working on womenswear and accessories for Lanvin. Shortly thereafter she decided to launch her own line, which combines bold, hand-drawn graphic prints with her signature jewelry and embellishments using Swarovski crystal, exotic skins and metal. Drawing from an eclectic mix of sources, Fulton’s work references her love of Pop Art, Art Deco and color. Fulton won the Young Designer of the Year Award at the Scottish Fashion Awards in both 2009 and 2010. She won the Swarovski Award for emerging talent in accessories at the British Fashion Awards in 2009 and the ELLE Award for Best New Designer in 2010.
“Upon receiving the Swan chair, I was struck by the combination of simple elegance and modernity it embodied. I wanted to create a design to complement and enhance the existing features whilst conveying my signature style and representing the graphic style of the Holly Fulton label. Given that the chair has quite a curvilinear design, I wanted to create a motif that was straight as a foil to this and create a central spine of crystal to run up the front and back of the piece, with interlocking colours and shapes emanating from this. Inspired by a diverse range of influences such as Art Deco and the work of Eduardo Paolozzi, the key idea for this came from Paolozzis Wittgenstein in New York with its eclectic mix of references and lines of solid block colour encircling pop art images and also from NASA images of space craft around this time. The colour palette of black filtering through grey to a variety of blues is taken from early Pucci prints as a nod to the chairs 1960s heritage.
Above all I wanted to create a strong yet fun visual which complements the iconic design of Arne Jacobsen and reflects the strength and breadth of the project and its commitment to a highly relevant cause. I would like to thank Swarovski for inviting me to be part of this project. I have never had the opportunity to work with crystal onto anything other than garments so it is exciting as a designer to see this realized. And I would like to take the opportunity to wish all involved the very best with the project and hope the Pink Swan Project is pleased with my design!”
The chairs will be on view at SUITE New York during the month of October for interested bidders to view in person.
