Title: Mbebo's Masterpiece
Year created: 2011
Medium: Locally source Congolese paper
This piece is framed.
At the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center, Mbebo was the baby of the family until July 2011 when infant Alex arrived. Mbebo was initially introverted and shy with the other chimps, but he is now dynamic, active and curious. Mbebo has some interesting tool-use behavior not seen in many other rescued orphans at Tchimpounga. This implies that he observed his mother using tools and he mimics that behavior.
Painting is one of the enrichment activities the Tchimpounga chimpanzees that keeps the chimps thinking. As the staff at the sanctuary tried to get chimpanzee footprints, the chimps started painting all on their own, and soon had brushes, sponges, and themselves covered in paint as they made their masterpieces.
