Description of piece:
This drawing is come from artist’s series “DOLLpera”, where part of Ricardo’s doll collection become characters from various Opera repertoires. They are an explosion of color done in the color/blocking technique. Colors can be customized, as well as dimensions and cropping. These images have been reproduced as paintings, wallpaper, fabric and furniture upholstery. By definition, the word “Doll” in an encyclopedia is modeled after a human being. Dolls have been around since the dawn of human civilization, and fashioned from all sorts of materials (stone, clay, wood, bone, cloth, paper, porcelain, china, rubber and plastic). While dolls have traditionally been defined as toys or entertainment for children, dolls are also collected by adults for many reasons: for their nostalgic value, beauty, historical importance and financial value. Based on historical data, dolls have been used as representations of a deity, and played a central role in religious ceremonies and rituals. As a collector, I only collect and use dolls as subject matter when they have belonged to someone and have a story behind them. I use dolls as still models or miniature human replicas and present a different point of view of our reality through their eyes, redefining their purpose. "Dollpera" is my series, where part of my doll collection become characters from various Opera repertoires. They are an explosion of color done in the color/blocking technique. Colors can be customized, as well as dimensions and cropping. These images have been reproduced as paintings, wallpaper, fabric and furniture upholstery. Gallery quality stretched canvas, printed on fine art premium canvas paper, with wire and ready to hang.
Artist bio:
Ricardo Monge is a Mixed Media Artist working with the mediums he loves…painting, photography, printmaking and graphic design. Monge was born in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, where he lived until graduating college with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (BFA) from the University of Puerto Rico. After graduation, he got accepted to Pratt Institute to complete his Master’s degree program in Fine Arts (MFA), majoring in printmaking and multi-media (graphic design, photography & video). Once he completed his degree, he was eager to change surroundings and gain professional experience as an artist and graphic designer. In order to do so, he decided to move London, while traveling Europe and experiencing the richness of different cultures evoking his Latin Heritage. Living in Puerto Rico, New York and London, in addition to several artist residencies in Skopelos, Greece, fostered an experimental attitude that attracted him to work and combine a variety of media (painting, printmaking, photography/video and graphic design), ultimately integrating these into his creative language. His diversified background and exposure to these new experiences are what has him to define his point of view of the world today. His range of imagery deals fundamentally with the subject matter of identity (ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, childhood, class), shaped by an individual perspective. His work is deeply influenced by personal memories, dreams, dolls and most recently icons that inspired him growing up. Ricardo currently works as the Art Director for Casa Santi Interior Design and in-house artist for Casa Santi Design Productions, including artwork, wallpaper and furniture lines.
