Artist bio: Morten Qvale (b. 1957) is one of Norway’s most renowned photographers. Morten grew up in Drøbak, a small, idyllic sea-side town close to Norway’s capitol city, Oslo. He was dedicated to several sports, including competing professionally in Kayak paddling. Morten was educated and certified as a typographer and first worked within the graphic industry, before he entered the publishing business.
In 1983 Morten founded Norway’s first international fashion magazine TIQUE, where he hired some of the world’s leading photographers, such as Bill King, Guy Bourdin and Terence Donovan, amongst others, to shoot for the magazine. Morten used the opportunity to learn from these legends, and soon he began shooting his on his own for the magazine. In 1986 he established his first photo and film studio, Zone 5 Studios, which is still running today.
Working all over the world, either shooting a fashion story, an advertising campaign or directing commercials, Morten finds time to relish his passion: working on his many different fine art photography projects. His first fine art images are from the beginning of the 90s, when Morten lived in New York, sharing apartment with Per Fronth, another recognized and famous Norwegian artist. At the moment he works on four different themes: Forms, Man-made Landscapes, Pure Landscape and Natural Beauty.
In 2013 Morten established Qvale Gallery, in a busy uptown area in Oslo. The gallery is dedicated solely to fine art photography. The gallery exhibits national and international photographers such as Albert Watson, Hans Feurer, Russell James, Patrick Demarchelier.
