Artist bio:
BUST: SOPHIE SIMMONS "It was an honor to have warm plaster harden around my breasts. I am so moved by the mission of KAB and was thrilled when I was asked to participate. What struck me the most when I met the team was that it was such a joyful, natural and personal experience, surrounded by women with amazing compassion and skill doing something meaningful. And so much laughter! Breasts are so beautiful: soft, feminine, nurturing and vulnerable. And each set has its own personality, which I hadn’t realized til I saw so many lined up, dignified and true. It’s like our boobs are individual fingerprints but they also change over time, making them even more personal. Too many of us experience losing one or both to save us from this deadly and cruel disease. I am one of many who almost lost a dear friend to breast cancer. Each breast had it own type of cancer. The cancer was triggered by pregnancy so she fought as she held her newborn. It’s was terrifying, heartbreaking and took all her courage. She survived it, and her fight was powerful in a way that made her stronger than I’ve ever known her, and also softer. How lucky we were that she was diagnosed early or this story would have had a different ending perhaps. Breast awareness. Touch them, look at them, keep them safe. Fuck you, cancer and bless you, KAB. May all of our individual round soft beautiful breasts remain healthy and keep supporting those who have to fight for them to remain so. Plus it’s kind of fun to immortalize your boobs to be honest. Plaster and nipples could be kind of a thing."
ARTIST: NEW HAT PROJECTS "We were honored to contribute our energy to celebrating not only our friend Sophie Simmons and her cast, but the work of this important foundation and all of the women it empowers. Color and pattern are the tools we use to express joy and were a natural way to channel Sophie's vibrancy and strength."
