Belgrade, Serbia 2008

"February 2008, Serbia. In subzero weather, I visited an outdoor market in Belgrade where I was struck by the ingenuity and determination of these gypsies in their cobbled-together vehicle. With the men up front, the women in a chainlink cage in the back, this was their SUV / pickup. The desire to traverse an infinitely expansive open road is as insatiable as the curiosity that drives our most inventive machinations."

With his spacetime artworks, Jay Mark Johnson explores the possibilities for timeline photography. Challenging the norms of perception, his visual and conceptual experiments are painterly, poetic and critically engaging. The artist/writer lives in Venice, California.
